Neurological EHV is a very serious disease and severely affected horses have a very poor prognosis. We understand what a worrying time this is for horse and pony owners.
Vaccination is not very effective against the neurological strain of EHV and works best if it is done at the whole yard level. It absolutely must NOT be done if there is any risk of exposure.
EHV can survive in the environment so cleaning and DISINFECTION is important. EHV can travel some distance in droplets, up to 50 metres, so DISTANCE is important. Following good biosecurity measures is essential. A wealth of information can be found here and the FEI document is particularly helpful https://www.bef.co.uk/detail.aspx?page=horse-health-biosecurity so attention to DETAIL is important. Remember the 3 Ds to keep your horses and ponies safe and don’t hesitate to contact the surgery if we can be of any help.
